How to set up auto roles in Discord

ZombyIO gives every new member the roles you pick: the moment they join, once they accept your rules, or after a short wait. Bots you invite can get roles of their own.

Takes about 2 minutesFree, Premium raises limits

What you will end up with

Everyone who joins ends up with the roles you picked. Discord’s audit log shows the reason next to each one, so your team can see where a role came from.

Audit log reason: Auto role for new members

Where to find it

Open the dashboard, pick your server and choose Auto roles in the sidebar (on a phone: under Features in the bar at the bottom). That is two clicks from your server list. You can also press Ctrl K anywhere in the dashboard and type the name.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Auto roles and pick the roles

In the dashboard, pick your server and choose Auto roles in the sidebar. Under Pick the roles, tick every role a new member should get. Everyone who joins gets all of them.

The free plan allows 3 roles, Premium 15. Once your server has more than 10 roles, a search box appears above the list.

    Important

ZombyIO can only hand out roles below its own highest role, and it needs the Manage Roles permission. A role it cannot give is marked Above ZombyIO and cannot be ticked. See roles and permissions for how to move the ZombyIO role up.

  2. Step 2: Choose when new members get them

Under When to grant them, pick one of the three cards:

    • After the rules screen is the default. Members get the roles once they accept your rules in Discord’s rules screen. In a server without the rules screen, they get them straight away.
    • Straight away: the second they finish joining.
    • After a short wait: 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes, or an exact number of seconds up to 600 (10 minutes).

    Important

Straight away and After a short wait do not wait for the rules screen. In a server that uses it, members then get the roles before they have accepted your rules. If your roles open channels, pick After the rules screen.

  3. Step 3: Give bots their own roles

This step is optional. Open Roles for bots near the bottom of the page. Bots you invite get these roles instead of the member roles, straight away, without the rules screen or a wait. The same limit applies: 3 roles on the free plan, 15 with Premium.

  4. Step 4: Switch auto roles on and save

Flip the switch in the coloured banner, or Switch auto role on in the checklist, and press Save in the bar at the bottom. What happens right now at the end of the page sums up who gets which roles, and when.

The preview beside the settings shows an example member with the roles, and the reason Discord’s audit log shows for each one.

    Tip

Switching auto roles off, or unticking a role, also stops grants that are still waiting, for example during a wait you set.

  5. Step 5: Check the role order

Open Server Check in your server’s sidebar in the dashboard. It lists every auto role ZombyIO cannot hand out and says how to fix it, usually by dragging the ZombyIO role above that role in Server Settings, Roles.

If Discord refuses a role anyway, ZombyIO stops asking for it for up to six hours, or until you move a role in Discord or save this page again.

Every setting explained

In the order the page shows them. Names in bold are exactly what the dashboard calls each control.

Set it up

Pick the rolesFree: 3 · Premium: 15

The roles every new member gets. Every role is listed except @everyone and roles that belong to an integration, such as the booster role. A mark beside a role explains itself: Above ZombyIO (Discord would refuse it, so it cannot be ticked), Administrator (cannot be ticked, and saving is refused while one is ticked), Moderation rights (only the server owner or an administrator can add it, because everyone who joins would get those rights) and Not found (the role was deleted, untick it).

Switch auto role on

The same switch as the one in the banner. Off by default. When it is off, new members get nothing, and grants that are still waiting are dropped.

When to grant them

When should a new member get them?

After the rules screen (the default), Straight away or After a short wait. Only the first one waits for members to accept your rules. While raid defence in auto moderation reports a raid, member roles wait at least 10 minutes, whichever card you picked.

How long do they wait?

Only for After a short wait: 10 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, 5 min, or an exact value from 1 to 600 seconds. Starts at 30 seconds.

Roles for bots

RolesFree: 3 · Premium: 15

Roles for bots added to your server, given straight away: no rules screen, no wait and no raid hold. Bots never get the member roles, and members never get these.

Free and Premium

Premium costs €6 a month per server and is shared by every admin of that server. It raises limits, it does not unlock the feature.

Something not working?

The problems people run into most often, and how to fix each one.

New members do not get the role

Check these in order:

  • Auto roles are switched off, or the change was not saved.
  • After the rules screen is chosen and the member has not accepted your rules yet.
  • The role sits above ZombyIO’s role, or ZombyIO lacks Manage Roles. The role list marks it Above ZombyIO, and Server Check says what to do. See roles and permissions.
  • Discord refused the role earlier. ZombyIO then skips it for up to six hours, or until you move a role or save this page.
Members get the roles before they accept the rules

Straight away and After a short wait do not wait for Discord’s rules screen. Choose After the rules screen and press Save.

The roles arrive minutes after someone joins
  • After a short wait is chosen, with the wait you set.
  • Raid defence in auto moderation reported a raid. While it does, member roles wait at least 10 minutes, so most raid accounts are gone before they get anything.
  • With After the rules screen, the roles come when the member accepts the rules.
I cannot tick a role
  • It is marked Above ZombyIO. Drag the ZombyIO role above it in Server Settings, Roles, then reload the page.
  • It is marked Administrator. Such a role cannot be handed out automatically, because everyone who joins would control your server.
  • You reached your plan’s limit: 3 roles on the free plan, 15 with Premium.
Saving the page is refused

The message next to the button says why:

  • A ticked role has the Administrator permission. Untick it.
  • You added a role with moderation rights, or switched auto roles on with one ticked, and you are neither the server owner nor an administrator. Ask one of them to save it.
  • You added more roles than your plan allows.
  • The role belongs to a ticket support team. Given to every newcomer, it would let everyone read every ticket.
  • Discord did not answer, so the new roles could not be checked. Try again in a moment.
  • Somebody else saved this page in the meantime. Reload it.
Only some of my auto roles are handed out

Premium ended and more roles are ticked than the free plan allows. The first 3, in the order you picked them, are handed out. The others stay saved and work again with Premium, and the page names the roles that are handed out.

A member held back by the anti-bot gate has no roles

Members the anti-bot join gate puts in quarantine get no auto roles when they join, because a member role would undo the quarantine. If you let them in, give them the roles yourself.

Does someone who leaves and rejoins get their old roles back?

They get the auto roles again, because the roles are handed out on every join. ZombyIO does not give back other roles they held before they left.

Still stuck?

Ask in the ZombyIO support server. Bring your support ID, your server’s support ID and a sentence about what you expected to happen, and someone will look at it with you.
