How to set up Twitch live notifications in Discord

Follow a Twitch channel and ZombyIO posts in your server when that streamer goes live, with the stream title, the category and the preview picture. How quickly depends on the channel, and this guide explains why.

Takes about 3 minutesFree, Premium raises limits

What you will end up with

When a streamer you follow goes live, ZombyIO posts your message with a card showing the stream title, the category and the live preview. A streamer who reconnects within half an hour is not announced twice.

Where to find it

Open the dashboard, pick your server and choose Twitch notifications in the sidebar (on a phone: under Features in the bar at the bottom). That is two clicks from your server list. You can also press Ctrl K anywhere in the dashboard and type the name.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Twitch notifications

In the dashboard, pick your server and choose Twitch notifications in the sidebar. The feature is already switched on for a new server, so the switch in the coloured banner shows Enabled. Nothing is posted until you have added a streamer and picked a channel for them.

Everything on the page is only stored when you press Save in the bar at the bottom.

    Tip

Switching the feature off keeps every streamer and every setting. Streams that start while it is off are not posted later.

  2. Step 2: Add a Twitch channel

Under Add a Twitch channel, type the streamer’s name or paste their channel address, then press Look it up. pixelpine, @pixelpine, twitch.tv/pixelpine and addresses like twitch.tv/pixelpine/about all work.

The page answers with the channel’s name and whether that streamer is live right now, so you can tell it found the right one.

You can follow 3 streamers on the free plan and 50 with Premium.

    Tip

Adding a streamer only puts them on the page. They are followed once you press Save.

  3. Step 3: Pick the channel and an optional ping

Each streamer gets a card under Streamers you follow. In Announcements go to, pick the channel for their go-live posts. A streamer without a channel stays silent. If your server has only one channel in the list, it is picked for you.

Under Ping this role you can pick a role to mention. Left empty, nobody is pinged. Only that role is ever pinged: an @everyone in a stream title stays plain text.

    Important

ZombyIO needs to see the channel, send messages and embed links there, or the post never appears, with no error in the channel. See roles and permissions.

  4. Step 4: Choose the wording and the look

Under What the announcement says, pick a starting point: Just the link, With a ping or A card of our own. A new server starts with its own default (a ping, the name and the link, plus the card), so the page shows Your own mix until you pick one.

Under How should the stream look?, A card of our own adds a card with the streamer’s name, the stream title, the category and the live preview in your colour. Just the link leaves the preview to Discord, which shows the channel but not the stream.

In Message when a stream starts you can use {name} for the channel name, {title} for the stream title, {game} for the category, {url} for the link to the channel and {mention} for the role being pinged.

  5. Step 5: Understand Instant and Watched

Each streamer’s card carries a badge that says how ZombyIO learns that the stream started:

    • Instant: Twitch sends ZombyIO a notice when the stream starts, and the post goes out shortly after that notice arrives.
    • Watched: ZombyIO asks Twitch on a cycle. Streamers followed by 25 or more servers on ZombyIO are checked every minute, those followed by 5 to 24 servers every 3 minutes, and all others every 15 minutes.

Twitch limits how many channels one app can have on the instant path. While there is room, every streamer gets a place, even a small one that only your server follows. Once the places run out, they go to the streamers most servers follow, and a smaller streamer can end up Watched, where a go-live can take up to 15 minutes to appear.

    Tip

Both badges are working states. Watched is not an error.

  6. Step 6: Ask the streamer to connect at zomby.io/twitch

Any streamer can move their own channel onto the instant path, whatever their size, once at least one server follows them on ZombyIO. Send them this page: zomby.io/twitch. There they press Connect with Twitch and approve on Twitch. That is all:

    • It is not a ZombyIO account and there is nothing to install.
    • ZombyIO asks Twitch for the smallest permission there is and keeps the channel id, the channel name and the display name, which are public anyway. The email address is never read.
    • Setting up the instant path normally takes about a minute. The page shows the result and how many servers follow the channel.

To undo it, the streamer removes ZombyIO under Connections in their Twitch settings. Posts carry on. The channel keeps its instant place for now, but can lose it to a streamer that more servers follow once the places run out.

    Important

Only the streamer can do this, signed in to their own Twitch account. The dashboard has no button for it, so send them the link.

  7. Step 7: Save and wait for the next stream

Press Save. There is no test button: the first post comes the next time the streamer goes live.

If the streamer is already live when you add them, that stream is not announced; the next one is. After a post, the same streamer is not announced again for 30 minutes, so a dropped connection or a restart stays quiet.

Every setting explained

In the order the page shows them. Names in bold are exactly what the dashboard calls each control.

Set it up

Switch the feature on

Turns the whole feature on or off. The same switch sits in the banner at the top. On by default for a new server. Off keeps every streamer and stops every post.

Twitch channelFree: 3 · Premium: 50

Finds a streamer by name or channel address and adds them to the page. Names are 3 to 25 letters, digits or underscores. Links to a single video or clip, or to Twitch pages that are not a channel such as the directory, are not accepted.

Streamers you follow

One card per streamer. Every setting in this group is per streamer.

Announcements go to

Where this streamer’s go-live posts appear. Empty by default, and a streamer with no channel posts nothing. The list shows your text and announcement channels.

Ping this role

The role mentioned in the post through {mention}. None by default. @everyone is not offered.

Instant / Watched

Instant means Twitch sends ZombyIO a notice when the stream starts. Watched means ZombyIO checks every 1, 3 or 15 minutes, depending on how many servers follow the streamer. A red Live now badge appears while the streamer was live at the last check.

Announce this streamer

Off keeps the streamer and their settings and stops their posts. On by default. To stop following a streamer completely, press the bin icon on their card, then save.

Own wording for this streamer

Your own text for this streamer, up to 2,000 characters. Left empty, the message from What the announcement says is used.

What the announcement says

Pick a starting point

Just the link: the name and the link, nobody pinged, no card. With a ping: the same with {mention} in front. A card of our own: a short line with the card. Change the text or the look by hand and the page shows Your own mix.

How should the stream look?

A card of our own (default) shows the streamer’s name, the stream title, a Category line when one is set, and the live preview picture, in your colour. When a stream has no title yet, the card says the streamer is live instead. Just the link posts only your text and leaves the preview to Discord.

Message when a stream starts

The post for every streamer without their own wording. Up to 2,000 characters. Default: {mention} **{name}** is live on Twitch! with {url} on the next line, in your server’s language.

Placeholders

{name} is the channel name, {title} the stream title, {game} the category, {url} the link to the channel and {mention} the role being pinged. An empty {game} or {mention} disappears without leaving a gap. An unknown placeholder stays as you typed it.

Card colour

The colour of the card, used only while A card of our own is chosen. Pick any colour or one of the six suggestions. Default is Twitch purple.

Free and Premium

Premium costs €6 a month per server and is shared by every admin of that server. It raises limits, it does not unlock the feature.

Something not working?

The problems people run into most often, and how to fix each one.

A streamer went live, but nothing was posted

Check these in order:

  • The streamer has no channel in Announcements go to.
  • The feature switch or Announce this streamer is off, or the page was not saved.
  • ZombyIO cannot post in that channel. It needs to see the channel, send messages and embed links. See roles and permissions.
  • The streamer is Watched and the next check has not happened yet. That can take up to 15 minutes.
  • The stream started less than 30 minutes after the last post for that streamer.
The go-live post came several minutes late

The streamer is Watched, not Instant. Watched streamers are checked every 1, 3 or 15 minutes, depending on how many servers on ZombyIO follow them. The streamer can move onto the instant path by connecting their Twitch account at zomby.io/twitch.

I added a streamer who was live, and nothing was posted

That is on purpose. A stream that is already running when you add the streamer is not announced, so nobody is told about a stream that started hours ago. Their next stream is posted as normal.

The streamer went live again and it was not announced

After a post, the same streamer is not announced again for 30 minutes. This keeps a dropped connection or a restart from being posted several times. A stream that starts more than 30 minutes after the last post is announced.

The post has no stream title or category

Right after a stream starts, Twitch sometimes has not published its details yet. ZombyIO asks again a few seconds later, and if the details are still missing it posts anyway, with the card saying the streamer is live instead of the title.

The lookup cannot find the channel
  • That does not look like a Twitch channel means the text is not a channel name or channel address. Use the name, or the address of the channel page.
  • No Twitch channel with that name means the name is misspelt or the account no longer exists.
  • Twitch did not answer means Twitch did not respond in time. Try again in a moment.
I cannot add another streamer

The free plan follows 3 streamers and Premium 50. The count is taken from what is saved, so after removing a streamer, press Save before adding a new one.

If Premium ends, every streamer stays on the page, but only the first 3 on the page are announced: the ones you added first.
