How to add ZombyIO to your Discord server and set it up

Adding ZombyIO takes one Discord screen and one question. A minute later, greetings, spam protection, levels and a private server log can already be running.

Takes about 3 minutes

What you will end up with

ZombyIO is on your server, you are signed in to the dashboard, and the features you ticked in Quick Start are running. Type /help in any channel to see the list.

general

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Press Add to Discord

Press Add to Discord on zomby.io or at the top of your server list in the dashboard. Discord opens its own screen: choose your server and confirm.

That one screen does three things. It adds the bot, adds its slash commands, and signs you in to the dashboard with your Discord account. For signing in, ZombyIO reads your Discord name and the list of servers you are on. It does not ask for your email address.

The invite asks for every permission at once, which includes Administrator, so Discord shows Administrator on that screen. Roles and permissions explains what each feature actually uses.

    Tip

In the dashboard, a server without the bot has a Set up button. It opens the same Discord screen with that server already chosen and locked, so the bot cannot end up on the wrong server.

  2. Step 2: Wait a moment while the bot joins

After you confirm, Discord sends you back to the dashboard, already signed in. A short page says ZombyIO is joining your server and checks again by itself until the bot has arrived, which usually takes a few seconds.

If it takes more than 30 seconds, the page says This is taking longer than usual and offers Check again and Add ZombyIO again. After three minutes it stops checking on its own.

ZombyIO posts nothing in your server when it joins. A new server starts with only Moderation switched on, so the moderation commands work for members who have the matching Discord permission. Everything else waits until you set it up.

    Important

If you close Discord’s screen without confirming, the bot is not added. Start again with Add to Discord.

  3. Step 3: Tell Quick Start what the server is for

The first time you open a server, Quick Start appears instead of the overview. It asks one question: what the server is for. Pick Friends and community, Gaming, Streamer or creator or Brand or support and press Continue.

Your answer only decides what is ticked on the next screen. You can untick anything there, and change every setting later.

    Tip

Not ready yet? Set up later takes you to the overview. Quick Start stays one click away on the overview, and in the search under Ctrl K.

  4. Step 4: Check the plan and pick the channels

The second screen lists what ZombyIO will do, already ticked for your answer:

    • Greet new members posts a short welcome in the channel you pick. Quick Start suggests a channel it found, such as one called welcome, and marks it Found in your server.
    • Keep spam and scams out switches on the spam filter. Under How strict? choose Relaxed, Balanced or Strict.
    • Reward active members switches on levels, so members earn XP and can check it with /rank.
    • Keep a server log writes joins, leaves, deleted messages and moderator actions to a channel only admins see. The default is Create a private channel #zomby-logs. You can pick an existing channel instead.
    • Language is what the bot writes in on this server.

Every answer ticks greetings, the spam filter and the server log. The spam filter starts on Relaxed for a community, Balanced for gaming or a creator, and Strict for a brand or support server. Levels are ticked for every answer except a brand or support server. Anything that already runs stays ticked.

The In Discord preview beside the list shows the greeting and a level-up message in the language you picked.

  5. Step 5: Press Set up and read the result

Press Set up followed by your server’s name. ZombyIO switches on what is ticked and switches off anything you unticked. A greeting or level-up text you wrote yourself is kept; only the standard texts are written in the language you picked.

The new log channel is called #zomby-logs. Everyone except administrators is kept out of it, and ZombyIO gets the permissions it needs to post there. Moderation cases and spam filter reports go there too, unless you already chose a channel for them. Creating it needs the bot’s Manage Channels permission.

The last screen lists everything that now runs, each with an Adjust link, and suggests up to three next steps that suit your answer.

    Important

Running Quick Start again is not only additive. A feature that was running and is unticked on the plan screen is switched off when you press Set up.

    welcome
  6. Step 6: Check it in Discord

Type /help in any channel of your server. Only you see the answer: the list of features running on the server, a button back to the dashboard and one to the support server.

From now on the server opens on its overview. Choose any feature there or in the sidebar to set it up. Every page stores your changes only when you press Save. The dashboard guide shows how everything is laid out.

    Tip

Have someone join, or use a second account, to see the greeting arrive in the channel you picked.

Something not working?

The problems people run into most often, and how to fix each one.

My server is not in the list

The list shows servers you own, or where you have the Administrator or Manage Server permission. Ask the owner for one of them.

The list is refreshed from Discord when it is older than five minutes, so a permission you were given a moment ago can take up to five minutes to show. Reload the page after that.

The page keeps saying ZombyIO is joining

Discord has not told ZombyIO about the server yet. Press Check again. If nothing changes, press Add ZombyIO again and make sure you confirm on Discord’s screen: closing it without confirming does not add the bot.

Quick Start did not open

It opens by itself only the first time a server is opened and nobody has saved any settings for it yet. After that, choose Start Quick Start on the overview, or press Ctrl K and type Quick Start.

Quick Start says the log channel could not be created

ZombyIO needs the Manage Channels permission to create #zomby-logs. Give its role that permission, or pick an existing channel under Log channel instead. See roles and permissions.

I cannot tick Greet new members

The bot cannot see a single text channel yet, so there is nowhere to post. Give the ZombyIO role access to at least one channel, then reload the page.

Quick Start switched off a feature I was using

On a second run, anything unticked on the plan screen is switched off. Open the feature in the sidebar, switch it on again and press Save. Its other settings were kept.

The bot answers in a different language than I picked

The language you pick is used for everything the bot posts on its own, such as greetings and level-ups. Replies to slash commands use the Discord language of the member who ran the command, when it is English, German, French, Spanish or Italian, and English otherwise. You can change the server language later under Settings in the sidebar.

I removed the bot by mistake

Add it again with Add to Discord. Your settings are kept for 90 days after the bot leaves a server and apply again as soon as it is back.

Still stuck?

Ask in the ZombyIO support server. Bring your support ID, your server’s support ID and a sentence about what you expected to happen, and someone will look at it with you.
