How to give ZombyIO the role position and permissions it needs

Discord decides what a bot may do in two ways: the permissions its role has, and where that role sits in your server’s role list. When a feature seems to do nothing, it is almost always one of the two.

Takes about 4 minutes

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Know what the invite gives ZombyIO

ZombyIO has its own role on your server, called ZombyIO. The invite asks for every permission at once for that role, including Administrator. With Administrator the bot can see every channel and use every permission, including Timeout Members, which /mute needs.

Administrator does not lift the role order rule in the next step. That rule applies to every bot, whatever its permissions.

If the ZombyIO role does not have Administrator on your server, it needs the individual permissions listed in step 3, and Timeout Members as well.

  2. Step 2: Move the ZombyIO role above the roles it hands out

Discord only lets a bot hand out, or take away, roles that sit below its own highest role in the role list. The same rule decides whom it can time out, kick or ban: the member’s highest role has to be below the bot’s. Nobody can act on the server owner.

To fix it, open Server Settings in Discord, then Roles, and drag the ZombyIO role above every role it should hand out: auto roles, reaction roles, level rewards, a quarantine role, Stream Drops rewards and roles used in blueprints.

In the dashboard, the pages that hand out roles mark a role that sits above ZombyIO, and Server Check lists it.

    Important

Some roles cannot be handed out by any bot, however high it sits: roles managed by Discord or another app, such as the booster role. Pick a different role for those.

  3. Step 3: Check the permissions each feature uses

Every feature that posts needs View Channel and Send Messages in its channel, and Embed Links when it posts an embed. The Premium welcome card also needs Attach Files. On top of that:

    • Auto roles, reaction roles, level rewards, Stream Drops role rewards and blueprints that change roles: Manage Roles.
    • Moderation: Timeout Members, Kick Members and Ban Members.
    • Auto moderation: Manage Messages to remove messages, plus Timeout, Kick or Ban Members for the actions you pick. Manage Server only for Discord’s own AutoMod rules and for pausing invites during a raid.
    • Anti-bot: Ban, Kick or Timeout Members for the action you pick, Manage Messages for a trap that acts, Manage Roles for a quarantine role.
    • Reaction roles with emoji: Add Reactions and Read Message History, and Manage Messages when reactions are taken back.
    • Tickets: Manage Channels and Manage Roles, and in each ticket category View Channel, Manage Channels, Manage Roles, Send Messages, Embed Links, Attach Files, Read Message History, Add Reactions and Manage Messages.
    • Server logs: View Audit Log, to name who did something and to post entries that only the audit log reports, such as role, nickname and timeout changes. Manage Webhooks lets busy logs arrive faster.
    • Triggers: whatever the answer does, for example Add Reactions for a reaction or Manage Messages to remove the question.

    Tip

Permission names here are the ones Discord shows under Server Settings, Roles, so you can switch them on letter by letter.

  4. Step 4: Let ZombyIO see the channels it uses

A channel can take permissions away from a role, even ones the role has for the whole server. If ZombyIO cannot see a channel, it cannot post there, and Discord does not even tell it the channel’s name.

To let it in, open the channel’s settings in Discord, then Permissions, add the ZombyIO role and allow View Channel, plus Send Messages and Embed Links where it posts. Forum channels take posts rather than messages, so there the bot needs Send Messages in Threads.

A channel ZombyIO is not allowed to see can be missing from the dashboard’s channel lists. Saving a page with a channel the bot cannot find is refused with a message saying so.

  5. Step 5: Let Server Check tell you what is missing

You do not have to work through the list above by hand. Server Check, in your server’s sidebar under Server, compares every feature that is switched on with what the bot is actually allowed to do, and names each problem:

    • ZombyIO is missing a permission for the whole server.
    • ZombyIO cannot hand out a role that sits above its own.
    • ZombyIO cannot see or cannot post properly in a channel.
    • A chosen channel or role no longer exists, or a channel is hidden from the bot.

Each one comes with How to fix it. A problem marked Tip still leaves the feature working, with less. Press Check again after you change something in Discord; otherwise the result can be up to a minute old.

  6. Step 6: Decide who can open the server in the dashboard

The server appears in someone’s dashboard when they own it, or have the Administrator or Manage Server permission there. Everyone who can open it can change every setting and use its Premium. The payment details of a Premium subscription open only for the person who paid. After you give or take away one of those permissions, the dashboard can take up to five minutes to notice.

A few choices need the owner or an Administrator: offering a role with moderation rights on a reaction role panel, making one a level reward or a Stream Drops reward, or handing one out in a blueprint. While a level reward carries moderation rights, they are also the only ones who can make XP easier to get, with faster levelling or more XP from Stream Drops or blueprints, or add new ways to lose XP in blueprints. With /xp, anybody else can only give XP to members past every such reward and take XP from members who have not reached one. Moderation rights include Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Messages, Kick, Ban and Timeout Members. A role with Administrator can never be handed out automatically.

Slash commands have their own permissions: the moderation commands need Timeout, Kick or Ban Members, and /xp needs Manage Server.

Something not working?

The problems people run into most often, and how to fix each one.

ZombyIO does not hand out a role

Check these in order:

  • The role sits above the ZombyIO role. Drag ZombyIO higher under Server Settings, Roles.
  • The ZombyIO role lacks Manage Roles.
  • The role is managed by Discord or another app, like the booster role. No bot can hand it out.
  • The role has Administrator. ZombyIO never hands those out automatically.

Server Check names whichever of these applies.

A moderation command says my highest role is not above theirs

The bot’s answer says who is too low. If it says its own highest role is not above theirs, drag the ZombyIO role higher. If it says the member has a role at least as high as yours, only someone with a higher role, or the owner, can act on them. Nobody can act on the server owner.

The bot does not post in a channel

The channel probably takes View Channel, Send Messages or Embed Links away from the ZombyIO role. Open the channel’s Permissions in Discord, add the ZombyIO role and allow them. In a forum channel it needs Send Messages in Threads. Server Check lists the exact permissions missing.

My channel is not in the dashboard’s channel list

The lists only offer channels a bot can post in, and they can be up to a minute old, so a channel you just created appears after a reload a minute later. If it is still missing, ZombyIO is probably not allowed to see it: Discord can leave such channels out of what it tells the bot. Add the ZombyIO role to the channel’s permissions with View Channel allowed, wait a minute and reload.

Muting does not work but kicking and banning do

/mute uses Discord’s timeout, which needs the Timeout Members permission. Administrator covers it; without Administrator, switch on Timeout Members for the ZombyIO role.

The server log does not say who did something

The log reads that from Discord’s audit log, which needs the View Audit Log permission. Without it, no entry names who did it, and role, nickname and timeout changes do not appear at all. Also check that Name who did it is switched on under Server logs.

A moderator cannot see the server in the dashboard

They need the Manage Server or Administrator permission, or to own the server. Give them a role that has one of them. It can take up to five minutes to appear in their list.

Saving says only the owner or an administrator can offer this role

The role carries moderation rights, and everyone who picks it, levels up to it or triggers the blueprint would get them. Ask the server owner or an administrator to save it, or choose a role without those rights.

Saving says only the owner or an administrator can save this change to XP

A level reward on your server carries moderation rights, and XP decides who reaches it. Changes that give more XP, give it faster, take more away, or change when a blueprint with XP runs need the server owner or an administrator. Giving less XP saves as usual.
