How to set up Stream Drops: reward Twitch viewers in Discord

Viewers who watch your Twitch stream collect drops on your Discord server: XP, roles, gift codes or a message from you, sent by direct message. You switch it on and add rewards, the streamer connects their Twitch account once, and each viewer signs up once on your drops page.

Takes about 8 minutesFree, Premium raises limits

What you will end up with

While the stream is live, ZombyIO checks which signed-up viewers are in the Twitch chat and adds up their watchtime. After the watchtime you choose, or at random, a viewer gets a drop by direct message and can see their latest drops on your drops page.

ZombyIO

Where to find it

Open the dashboard, pick your server and choose Stream Drops in the sidebar (on a phone: under Features in the bar at the bottom). That is two clicks from your server list. You can also press Ctrl K anywhere in the dashboard and type the name.

Open the dashboard

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Switch Stream Drops on and choose when drops happen

In the dashboard, pick your server and choose Stream Drops in the sidebar. Flip the switch in the coloured banner at the top.

Under When drops happen, pick a starting point:

    • Cosy: a drop every 90 minutes of watchtime, no random drops.
    • Lively: a drop every 60 minutes, plus about one random drop per hour.
    • Party: a drop every 30 minutes, plus about two random drops per hour.

Then press Save in the bar at the bottom of the page.

    Important

Save before you connect Twitch in step 3. The connect button takes you away from the page, and anything you have not saved is lost.

  2. Step 2: Add what can drop

Under What can drop, press Add a reward and choose what it is:

    • XP for the level system, 100 by default.
    • A role, forever or for a set time such as a week.
    • A gift code from your pool, such as a game key.
    • A message in your own words, good for a shout-out.

Each drop picks one reward at random. How often, compared to the others sets the odds: a reward with weight 4 drops four times as often as one with weight 1. You can have 3 rewards on the free plan and 25 with Premium. Press Save when you are done.

    Tip

For gift codes, paste them under Gift codes, one per line, and press Add to the pool. Codes are stored straight away, without Save. Every gift drop hands out one code, the oldest first.

    Important

For a role reward, ZombyIO needs the Manage Roles permission and a role above the reward role. The Stream Drops page warns you when either is missing, and it will not save a reward that could drop a role with Administrator. See roles and permissions.

  3. Step 3: Connect the streamer’s own Twitch account

Under Set it up, press Connect Twitch account. Twitch asks for approval, and the Twitch account that approves becomes the channel whose viewers are counted. So before you press the button, make sure this browser is signed in to Twitch as the streamer.

The person pressing the button needs to manage the server in the dashboard. If the streamer is not one of your admins, do this step together on one computer.

When you come back, the page shows Connected: with the channel name, and the address of your drops page is set to the streamer’s Twitch name if nobody else uses it.

    Tip

Connecting Twitch for live notifications on the ZombyIO website is something else. Only this button lets the bot read the chat for drops.

  4. Step 4: Check your drops page address and add an invite link

Under Your drops page, the Address is the end of the link your viewers open, for example zomby.io/twitch/lenaplays. If the name you want is taken, the page offers free ones instead.

Under Set it up, paste an invite to your server into Discord invite link, so viewers who are not members yet can join from the drops page. Then press Save.

    Important

Changing the address later moves your drops page and breaks every link you have already shared, including the link in the drop messages viewers have received. Disconnecting Twitch takes the page down. Viewers find their drop history and gift codes on that page, so the dashboard warns you before you save either change.

  5. Step 5: Share the drops page with your viewers

Press Copy the address and put the link under your stream and in your server. ZombyIO does not post it for you. Once a viewer has had a drop, every drop message ends with the link too.

    Important

Share it only once Stream Drops is switched on and saved. While it is off, viewers who open the page can still sign in, connect Twitch and see how to join your server, and the page asks them to come back once drops are on. They are only signed up when they open the page again while drops are on.

    announcements
  6. Step 6: Let each viewer sign up once

On your drops page, each viewer goes through three steps:

    • Sign in with Discord, so drops know which Discord account they belong to.
    • Connect Twitch, with the Twitch account they watch with.
    • Be on the Discord server. The page shows your invite link and an I joined, check again button.

That is all. Nobody has to write in the chat.

    Tip

A viewer can unlink Twitch at any time with Unlink Twitch on the drops page, or on the ZombyIO settings page under Your data. From then on no watchtime is collected for them. Their watchtime and drops stay with their ZombyIO account until they delete it, so a milestone set to Only once does not drop twice and today’s drops still count toward the daily limit. Connecting Twitch again later lets them earn again. Removing ZombyIO under Connections in their Twitch settings unlinks them the same way.

    Important

Being in the chat is not enough. A viewer who has not been through these steps on your drops page earns nothing, however long they watch. A viewer who already connected Twitch for another server’s drops still has to open your page once.

  7. Step 7: Go live and watch the drops arrive

While the stream is live, ZombyIO looks at the Twitch chat about every two minutes and credits the time since its previous look, up to ten minutes per look, to every signed-up viewer who is in the chat. When ZombyIO is busy the looks can be further apart, and a gap of more than ten minutes still counts as ten. Watchtime adds up across streams and is never reset, so 40 minutes today and 20 minutes tomorrow reach a 60 minute drop.

When a drop lands, the viewer gets a direct message from ZombyIO naming the reward. On the drops page they see their watchtime for today, this month and all time, and their latest drops. The page also shows where they stand: about how many more minutes of watchtime until their next milestone drop (or that they already had their one drop, when the milestone is set to Only once), how many drops they got today out of the daily limit (or that the limit is reached), and a line that sums up your server’s rules.

    Tip

Each viewer gets at most 5 drops a day unless you change it under More settings. Days start at midnight UTC.

Every setting explained

In the order the page shows them. Names in bold are exactly what the dashboard calls each control.

Set it up

Connect the Twitch channel

Sends you to Twitch to approve access. The Twitch account that approves becomes the channel that is watched. Once connected, the page shows the channel name and a Disconnect button, which takes effect when you save. Connecting does not switch the feature on.

Discord invite link

Shown on your drops page to viewers who are not on your server yet. Only links starting with https://discord.gg/ or https://discord.com/invite/ are accepted, up to 200 characters. While the link does not fit, the page shows the reason under the field, and Save refuses the whole save with that reason, so none of your changes are saved until you fix the link or clear the field. Empty by default.

When drops happen

Pick a starting point

Cosy, Lively and Party set the milestone, whether it repeats and the random rate together, and nothing else. The factory settings match none of them, so a new page shows Your own mix.

A drop after this much watchtime

A drop each time a viewer’s watchtime reaches this amount: 15, 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes, or an exact value up to 10,080 minutes (a week). Default 60. No milestone drops switches it off. Watchtime counts across all streams and is never reset.

Does the milestone repeat?

Every time pays out again at every multiple of the milestone. Only once gives each viewer one drop on this server, ever. Default Every time. Not available while No milestone drops is chosen.

Random drops per hour

Surprise drops for the whole audience, not per viewer: 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 per hour of live time, or an exact value up to 60. Each one goes to a random viewer who is in the chat at that moment, so the more viewers are signed up, the smaller each one’s chance. Default No random drops.

What can drop

Add a rewardFree: 3 · Premium: 25

Adds a reward. Each drop picks one of the rewards that are switched on, at random. When Premium ends, the rewards you already have stay and keep dropping, but you cannot add more.

This reward can drop

Switch a reward off to stop it dropping without deleting it.

What is it?

XP, A role, A gift code or A message.

Name of the reward

Up to 100 characters. Shown in bold in the drop message for gift codes and messages, and in each viewer’s list of drops. For a gift code, the name of the code batch is shown instead when it has one.

How much XP

From 1 to 100,000. Default 100. The XP is added as it is: multipliers and the XP pause of levelling do not apply, and it is stored even while Levelling is off. Level-up roles and messages only follow when Levelling is on. While a level reward gives moderation rights, only the server owner or an administrator can raise the most XP a viewer can get from drops in a day: the biggest XP reward times the drops per viewer per day.

Which role

Any role except @everyone and roles that belong to an app. The list also offers powerful roles, so check what you pick. ZombyIO can only hand out roles below its own, and the page warns you when it cannot give the role you picked. A reward with an Administrator role can only be saved while it is switched off, and only the server owner or an administrator can put a role with moderation rights in the draw, make one there easier to get (sooner milestones, more random drops, more drops per viewer per day, a bigger share or keeping it longer), or connect another stream to it. See roles and permissions.

The role expires after

Never, it stays, 24 hours, 1 week, 1 month (30 days), 6 months, 1 year, or an exact number of minutes up to five years. When the time is up, ZombyIO takes the role away again within about a minute. A temporary role never takes away a role the viewer already had: if they already hold the role and it did not come from an earlier timed drop, the drop leaves it as theirs, with no end date, and the drop message says the role is theirs. A second drop of the same role still does not add time: the later end date counts.

What the message says

For gift codes and messages: your own words in the drop message, up to 500 characters. A message reward needs this text or a name, or it never drops.

How often, compared to the others

1, 2, 4 or 8, or an exact value from 1 to 100. Default 1. A reward with weight 4 drops four times as often as one with weight 1.

Gift codes

What these codes are

A name for the batch of codes you are adding, such as Steam 10 EUR, up to 100 characters. The drop message shows it above the code.

One code or link per lineFree: 25 · Premium: 500

One code or link per line, up to 400 characters each and 100 lines at a time. Add to the pool stores them at once, without Save. The limit counts codes that have not been handed out yet. Lines longer than 400 characters, lines past the first 100 and codes that do not fit in the pool are not stored: the page says how many of each, and leaves exactly those lines in the box so nothing is lost. The page lists the first 100 waiting codes and says how many more are waiting. Every gift reward draws from this one pool, oldest code first. When the pool is empty, gift drops fall back to your other rewards. A code is handed out once and stays handed out, even if its winner later deletes their ZombyIO account. Once a code is handed out, the pool no longer keeps it: only the winner’s copy in their list of drops remains.

Address

The end of your drops page link. 3 to 40 characters: letters, numbers, dashes and underscores, starting and ending with a letter or a number. Umlauts and letters of other alphabets work, but one address cannot mix alphabets, for example Latin letters with Cyrillic or Greek look-alikes. Japanese that mixes kanji, hiragana and katakana is fine. Invisible characters and look-alike letters such as small capitals or a dotless ı are not allowed, and wide or stylised letters are turned into plain ones. Each address exists once across all servers, and a few names such as twitch or zomby are reserved. Save refuses an address that is malformed or reserved and says why, and Copy the address only works once the address is saved and the drops page is live, which needs a connected stream. It is set to the streamer’s Twitch name when you connect, if that is free. Without an address there is no drops page and no watchtime is counted.

More settings

Drops per viewer per day

The most drops one viewer can get in a day, milestone and random drops together: 1, 3, 5 or 10, or an exact value up to 50. Default 5. Days start at midnight UTC.

Extra line in every drop message

A line added to the end of every drop message, up to 500 characters. Placeholders such as {user} are not filled in here.

Free and Premium

Premium costs €6 a month per server and is shared by every admin of that server. It raises limits, it does not unlock the feature.

Something not working?

The problems people run into most often, and how to fix each one.

A viewer watches the stream but gets no watchtime

Check these in order:

  • They have not been through the three steps on your drops page: signed in with Discord, connected Twitch and joined your server. Being in the chat is not enough.
  • They opened the page while Stream Drops was off. Ask them to open it again.
  • They watch with a different Twitch account from the one they connected.
  • They unlinked Twitch, on your drops page or in their ZombyIO settings, or removed ZombyIO under Connections in their Twitch settings. Connecting Twitch again on your drops page lets them earn again.
  • The stream is not live, or they are not in its chat.
  • They left your server. Watchtime pauses until they rejoin and then carries on by itself.
The page says Connected, but nobody earns anything
  • Stream Drops is off, or was switched on without pressing Save.
  • The Address under Your drops page is empty. Without it there is no drops page, and nothing is counted.
  • The streamer removed ZombyIO’s access in their Twitch settings. The Stream Drops page then shows that Twitch access was withdrawn and offers to connect again: press Connect Twitch account again with the streamer’s account. Until you do, your drops page no longer tells viewers that their watchtime counts.
Watchtime adds up, but no drops arrive
  • No reward can drop: every reward is switched off, a role reward has no role picked, a message reward has neither text nor a name, or the only rewards are gift codes and the pool is empty.
  • No milestone drops and No random drops are both chosen.
  • The viewer has reached Drops per viewer per day. It resets at midnight UTC.
  • The milestone is set to Only once and the viewer already had it.
  • The viewer is held in quarantine by anti-bot. While they are, no drop reward of any kind reaches them: no XP, no gift code, no message and no role. The drop waits and is paid once they are out of quarantine.
A viewer won a role but does not have it

ZombyIO was not allowed to give it: it lacks the Manage Roles permission, the role sits above ZombyIO’s own role, or the role was deleted. The viewer is told so on their drops page and, when it arrives, in the drop message, and under What can drop the Stream Drops page lists who is still waiting for a role they won in the last 14 days. Fix the permission or the role order (see roles and permissions), and ZombyIO gives those viewers the role by itself, usually starting within ten minutes and at up to 40 viewers a minute, and sends each of them a message. A role with a time limit counts from when it arrives. This only happens while the viewer is still on your server and the role is still a reward. A deleted role cannot be given any more: pick another role for the reward and give it to those viewers by hand.

A viewer did not get a direct message

Discord refused the message, for example because the viewer does not accept direct messages from ZombyIO. The reward is applied anyway, and their drops page shows it with a note, gift code included.

I cannot add more gift codes

The pool holds 25 codes on the free plan and 500 with Premium, counting only codes not handed out yet. When you add more than fit, only as many as fit are stored, and the page says how many were left out and keeps them in the box. When the pool is already full, the page says so and nothing is added. Remove old codes or wait until some are handed out.

The drops page cannot be found

The page exists only while a streamer is connected and an address is set. Check both on the Stream Drops page and press Save. When Stream Drops is switched off, the page still opens but says that drops are paused.
