How to set up levels, XP and role rewards in Discord

Members earn XP for chatting and climb levels. You decide how fast that goes, where level-ups are announced and which roles people earn on the way.

Takes about 6 minutesFree, Premium raises limits

What you will end up with

Every message earns a few XP, with a pause so nobody can spam their way up. When somebody reaches a new level, ZombyIO says so and hands out the role you set for that level.

general

Where to find it

Open the dashboard, pick your server and choose Levelling in the sidebar (on a phone: under Features in the bar at the bottom). That is two clicks from your server list. You can also press Ctrl K anywhere in the dashboard and type the name.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open Levelling and switch it on

In the dashboard, pick your server and choose Levelling in the sidebar. Flip the switch in the coloured banner at the top.

The switch, like everything else on the page, is only stored when you press Save in the bar at the bottom. Until then nothing changes on your server.

    Tip

You can set everything up first and switch it on last. Nothing reaches your server while the switch is off.

  2. Step 2: Choose how fast members level up

Pick one of the three speeds. Normal gives 15 to 25 XP a message and counts at most one message a minute per member, which is the rate most servers run. At that rate level 10 takes about 234 messages.

    • Take your time: about 10 XP a message, with a two minute pause.
    • Quick climb: double the XP, with a 30 second pause. Good for a small server.

The levels themselves follow the same curve as MEE6: level 1 needs 100 XP, level 5 needs 1,150 and level 10 needs 4,675 in total.

  3. Step 3: Decide where level-ups are announced

Under Level-up announcement, choose where the message goes: where the member was talking, in one channel you pick, by direct message, or nowhere.

Then write the message. {user.mention} mentions the member, {level} is their new level, {xp} their total XP and {server} the server name. Leave the text as it is and the bot uses its own, in your server’s language.

    Tip

Only the member who levelled up can be pinged. An @everyone typed into the text stays plain text.

    level-ups
  4. Step 4: Add role rewards

Under Role rewards, press Add a reward, enter a level and pick the role. Add a row for each level you want to reward: up to 10 on the free plan, 100 with Premium.

Keep earlier reward roles is on by default, so a member at level 25 keeps the roles from level 5 and 10 too. Switch it off if each new reward role should replace the previous one.

    Important

ZombyIO can only hand out roles that sit below its own role in your server’s role list, and it needs the Manage Roles permission. The page warns you when a role is out of reach. See roles and permissions for how to fix it.

  5. Step 5: Keep bot and spam channels out

Open More settings at the bottom of the page. Under Where XP is not earned, pick the channels where chatting should earn nothing, such as a bot commands or counting channel, and any roles that should never earn XP. Threads and forum posts count as the channel they are in.

  6. Step 6: Save, then try /rank

Press Save. Write a message or two on your server and type /rank. It shows your level, your XP and your position. /leaderboard lists the top members, 10 per page.

    Tip

XP is written every few seconds, so a level-up can arrive a moment after the message that earned it.

How fast members level up

Speed presets

Three ready-made speeds that set the XP range and the pause together. Change either one by hand and the page shows Your own mix instead.

XP per message, at least

The lowest XP a message can earn, from 1 to 500. Default 15. Found under More settings.

and at most

The highest XP a message can earn, also under More settings. Default 25. Each message earns a random whole number between the two, so nobody can count messages to the next level.

Pause before a message counts again

How long a member waits before their next message earns XP again: off, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes or an exact value up to an hour. Default one minute, also under More settings. Messages sent during the pause are fine, they just earn nothing.

Level-up announcement

Where does the level-up message go?

Where the level-up message goes. Where they were talking is the default. In one channel needs a channel below it; without one, nothing is posted. By direct message reaches members who have DMs from server members open.

Announcement channel

Only for In one channel: the channel every level-up is posted in.

Announcement message

Up to 500 characters. Placeholders: {user.mention} and {user} both mention the member, {level} is the new level, {xp} the total XP, {server} the server name. An emptied text sends nothing.

Should the announcement tidy itself up?

Removes the announcement after 30 seconds, 5 minutes, an hour or an exact number of seconds up to 3,600. Never keeps it. Not offered for direct messages.

Role rewards

At level · Grant this roleFree: 10 · Premium: 100

A role for a level. Several roles can share one level. Rows without a role are dropped when you save. A role with Administrator is refused, and only the server owner or an administrator can make a role with moderation rights a reward. While such a reward exists, only they can make XP easier to get, with more XP per message, a shorter wait, a bigger multiplier or fewer ignored channels or roles. Anybody else can use /xp only to give XP to members past every such reward, or to take XP from members who have not reached one.

Keep earlier reward roles

On: members keep every reward role up to their level. Off: the newest reward role replaces the ones before it. On by default.

XP multipliers

By rolePremium onlyFree: 0 · Premium: 50

Members with this role earn faster or slower. Enter a percentage: 150 is half as much again, 200 is double, 50 is half. Only chat XP is multiplied.

By channelPremium onlyFree: 0 · Premium: 50

Messages in this channel, and in its threads, earn faster or slower. When several multipliers apply, only the highest boost and the strongest slow-down count, and a member who has both gets both: a role on 200 in a channel on 50 earns the normal rate. Two boosts never multiply together.

Where XP is not earned

Channels that earn no XP

Messages here earn no XP, and neither do its threads and forum posts. Up to 200 channels.

Roles that earn no XP

Members with any of these roles earn no XP anywhere. Up to 200 roles.

Rank card

Answer with a rank cardPremium only

When on, /rank answers with a picture instead of a text message. Off by default, also on Premium.

Layout and backgroundPremium only

Drag the panel, avatar, progress bar and the three text lines, or move them with the arrow keys. A background picture is cropped to 934 by 282 pixels. Uploading or removing the picture takes effect at once, without pressing Save.

Something not working?

The problems people run into most often, and how to fix each one.

Someone reached the level but did not get the role

Check these in order:

  • The role sits above ZombyIO’s role, or ZombyIO lacks Manage Roles. Drag the ZombyIO role higher in Server Settings, Roles. See roles and permissions.
  • You added the reward after they had passed that level. Rewards are handed out when a level changes, so they get it at their next level-up. /xp give with a small amount that crosses a level gives it at once.
  • Premium ended and the reward is not among the 10 with the lowest levels. The others stay saved and work again with Premium.

A role Discord refused is skipped for up to six hours, or until you move the role or save the page again.

A member earns no XP

Levelling has to be switched on and saved. After that, a message earns nothing while the member’s pause is still running, in a channel under Channels that earn no XP, or from a member with one of the Roles that earn no XP. Bots never earn XP, and neither do direct messages to the bot.

There is no level-up message
  • Do not announce is chosen, or the message text is empty.
  • In one channel is chosen but no channel is picked.
  • ZombyIO cannot post in that channel. It tries again after ten minutes.
  • The member has direct messages closed, when the message goes by DM.
  • The level changed through /xp. Those changes are never announced.
My XP multiplier does nothing

Multipliers are part of Premium, and they only change XP earned by chatting. When several apply, only the highest boost and the strongest slow-down count, so a second, smaller boost adds nothing. A value of exactly 100 is the normal rate. A message always earns at least 1 XP, however strong the slow-down.

/rank answers with text instead of a picture

The rank card is part of Premium, and even then it starts switched off. Turn on Answer with a rank card in the Rank card section and save. When many cards are being drawn at once, the bot answers with the text version rather than making anyone wait.

People who left are still on the leaderboard

Their XP is kept in case they come back. /xp reset with their name removes them.

Can I bring over levels from MEE6?

Not yet: levels start at zero. The level curve is the same as MEE6’s, though, so a level takes the same XP it did there.
